Working with Range

Most senior leaders believe executive presence is about projecting power. The leaders who actually shift rooms are doing something almost opposite. They are working with range.

Range is the capacity to read what the room actually needs and to meet it there, rather than projecting the same version of yourself into every conversation. It is also the capacity to prepare for what the moment will ask of you, not just for what you want to say.

Sometimes the room needs power. Sometimes it needs measured listening. Sometimes it needs a great question rather than an answer. The leaders who can move between those modes, accurately and on purpose, are the ones who consistently move the work forward.

It is worth saying that the trap is not always about power. Sometimes it is about personality. Leaders who are warm, funny, and quick can lean on those qualities the way other leaders lean on authority. Both are forms of working with one mode rather than developing the range to choose among several. Both have a ceiling.

The leaders we remember were not the loudest in the room, and they were not the most charming. They were the ones who showed us they could meet the room and the moment they were actually in.
Trust was built. The harder questions got answered. Decisions got made.
